32nd Sunday of Ordinary Time - Year A

WISDOM

In the Old Testament wisdom is more than intelligence or common sense. It is the divine will or plan of God for all created things. It is an attribute of God and is personified as a women. Early Christians understood it as a foreshadowing of the Holy Spirit. The book of Wisdom is a series of meditations about God's will.

Resplendent and unfading is wisdom

The dead in Christ will rise first.
Behold the bridegroom.

FALLEN ASLEEP

Paul is teaching about the resurrection. Some of the people of Thessalonica expected the Second Coming of Christ to happen in the immediate future. They also anticipated that they would ascend to heaven with him. But some believers had died. This led survivors to fear that the dead wouldn't share in Jesus' triumph.
Paul answers that the dead Christians hadn't really died; they had merely entered a sleep-like state pending the resurrection.
