20th Sunday Ordinary Time - Year B

Making The Most Of The Opportunity

Why did God put us on Earth? Most of us live here for less than a century. Some leave a mark of their passing, but most do not.
If we think only of our Earthly existence, it may seem futile. But if we see this life as our childhood, it becomes a prep school for something better to come. We graduate when we learn to love unselfishly. God gives us time to mature.

Wisdom has built her house

I will bless the Lord at all times

How can he give us his flesh to eat?
Be filled with the Holy Spirit.

His Flesh To Eat?

Jesus has been teaching about what he calls "The Bread of Life". The church teaches that he is referring to Holy Communion--the bread and wine that become his blood. The audience does not have this insight and imagines the unthinkable: Jesus is calling for people to consume his flesh. This sparks a wave of argument and disgust.
How would we react without knowing the church teaching? Would we have revulsion at the thought? But then, how do we view Communion? Do we really stop and think what is happening, or has Communion become a mechanical action for us?
